these three major worries keep many people on the fence about buying their first drone for years.
The drone category has a rather awkward catch. Official promotional videos make every pilot look like a master of cinematic shots. But once you spend thousands of yuan and bring a drone home, your first task is to figure out "how to purchase crash insurance."
Fear of crashing, steep learning curves, and the risk of your new gadget gathering dust — these three major worries keep many people on the fence about buying their first drone for years.
Launched by DJI last year, the Neo takes a completely different approach from traditional entry-level aerial drones. Weighing only 135 grams, lighter than a smartphone, it supports takeoff and landing directly on your palm, with no remote controller required. Its price lands in the thousand-yuan range, making it the cheapest entry ticket to DJI’s product lineup.
At the mere mention of the word "drone", many people picture stunning 4K footage of mountains, rivers and lakes. Unfortunately, that is not what the Neo is built for.
Essentially, it is a flying Vlog camera. Equipped with a 1/2-inch CMOS sensor, 12-megapixel resolution and 4K/30fps video recording — these specs match the main camera of most smartphones, yet only hit the baseline standard among aerial drones. In bright daylight, the footage works perfectly for social media posts and Vlog editing. However, its mediocre image quality becomes obvious on cloudy days, indoors or at dusk. Reviews and user feedback are unanimous on this point.
So here is the first piece of advice: if your goal is to capture breathtaking aerial shots, look straight at the Mini series or Flip model instead. Increase your budget for better image quality and do not cut corners here. The Neo was designed for one specific group of users: people who want to document life, but have been deterred by the high barriers and risks of conventional drones.
Palm takeoff and landing are incredibly convenient, yet they come with caveats.
The Neo’s biggest selling point is its zero-barrier operation: power it on, select a mode, hold out your hand, and the drone will lift off from your palm automatically. After shooting, it flies back and lands right on your hand. No remote controller, no joystick practice, no need to scout a takeoff site. Gesture and voice controls are also supported.
This experience is a game-changer for absolute beginners. Reviews across Zhihu and other platforms consistently report that total newbies can get usable footage within ten minutes. Its fully enclosed propeller guards also solve another beginner nightmare: crashes. With propellers fully shielded, bumps and falls usually only scratch the guard rather than breaking the drone mid-air.
Still, "zero barrier" does not mean "zero limitations". Here are three hard truths.
First: it has no obstacle avoidance sensors whatsoever. The visual sensors on the bottom of the body only handle positioning, hovering and palm landing; they cannot help the drone dodge trees. All the orbit and follow shots shown in official promotional materials must be filmed in open spaces. Lateral movement and backward flight carry the highest risk of accidents — the drone cannot see its sides or rear, so you have to watch out for it.
Second: its rated 4-level wind resistance is the upper limit, not the daily operating standard. At just 135 grams, gusts at the seaside, mountain tops or near tall buildings can make its footage shaky. Veteran pilots in review communities offer practical advice: while the official spec states level 4 wind resistance, operate it only up to level 3. Keep it grounded on windy days.
Third: roughly 18 minutes of flight time per battery is barely enough for a satisfying shooting session. For an outing, accounting for takeoff, tracking, return-to-home and battery swaps, the actual usable footage time is even shorter than the advertised figure.
The Neo’s AI subject tracking is its most valuable feature at this price point. When tracking mode is activated, it acts as your personal cameraman. It follows you while you cycle, run or skate. After recording, you can apply preset templates in the app to generate polished videos in one click. For parents filming kids, sports enthusiasts, and solo travellers wanting to appear in their own footage, this function is equivalent to bringing along a free cameraman.
