When will AI surpass humans? Wu Yongming: Achieving super artificial intelligence will take a long time

On November 7, Wu Yongming, CEO of Alibaba, made a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the Wuzhen Summit of the 2025 World Internet Conference.

Wu Yongming believes that the development of AI will go through three stages, from the emergence of intelligence, general artificial intelligence to super artificial intelligence, but it will take a very long time to reach the stage of super artificial intelligence.

He said that the first stage of AI development is the emergence of intelligence. AI gradually enters the real world to solve problems and create value by learning massive human knowledge and understanding human intentions. The characteristic of AI in this stage is “learner”;

The second stage is towards General Artificial Intelligence (AGI). At present, we are at the beginning of this stage. When we put forward requirements to AI, AI agents are already able to complete a lot of work and connect to the real world through interfaces to operate some physical devices. The characteristic of AI in this stage is “assistant human”;

The third stage is to achieve “Super Artificial Intelligence (ASI)”. AI connects the entire amount of raw data in the real world and has the ability to learn and iterate autonomously. At this stage, the characteristic of AI is to “surpass humans”. It will take a very long time to reach this stage.

Wu Yongming stated that Alibaba is building a large-scale AI infrastructure to provide leading AI services to global developers through full stack technology accumulation. Technological inclusiveness is a new opportunity in the era of AI. ”He said that the new generation of AI adopts natural language interaction, and groups such as the elderly, children, and people with disabilities can share the technological dividends universally. Standing at the beginning of the intelligent era, the industry must pay more forward-looking attention to vulnerable groups and make digital technology a booster for everyone to cross the digital divide
